Description
Apple turnovers are flaky pastries filled with a sweet, spiced apple mixture. Wrapped in golden puff pastry, they’re a delicious handheld dessert that’s quick to prepare and perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
- 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed
- 2–3 apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled and diced
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp cornstarch or flour
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Optional: 1/2 cup powdered sugar + 1–2 tsp milk (for icing)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a skillet over medium heat, cook diced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Stir until thickened and apples are tender. Let cool slightly.
- Roll out puff pastry sheets and cut into 4–6 inch squares.
- Spoon apple filling onto one half of each square, leaving space at the edges.
- Fold each square into a triangle and seal edges with a fork.
- Brush the tops with beaten egg and cut small slits for steam to escape.
- Bake for 18–22 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed.
- Let cool slightly. Optional: mix powdered sugar and milk to drizzle over the top as icing.
Notes
Use firm apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for best texture.Don’t overfill the pastry to prevent leaking.Chill assembled turnovers for 10–15 minutes before baking for best results.To freeze, assemble and freeze unbaked or bake and freeze. Reheat in the oven until warmed through.
Customize with pears, berries, or caramel for different variations.
