Description

Sweet, savory, and rich Coca-Cola Caramelized Onions take classic caramelized onions to the next level. The soda enhances their natural sweetness and creates a glossy, flavorful topping perfect for burgers, steaks, sandwiches, and more.

Ingredients

  • 3 large yellow or sweet onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter or olive oil
  • ½ cup Coca-Cola (regular, not diet)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar for extra depth

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, melt butter or heat olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Stir to coat evenly.
  3. Cook for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions soften and start to turn golden.
  4. Pour in the Coca-Cola and continue cooking, stirring often, until the liquid has mostly evaporated and the onions are deeply caramelized—about 20–25 minutes more.
  5. Season with black pepper and, if desired, stir in a splash of balsamic vinegar.
  6. Remove from heat and serve warm as a topping or condiment.

Notes

Regular Coca-Cola works best—Diet Coke or Coke Zero won’t caramelize properly. For a tangy finish, add balsamic vinegar toward the end of cooking.Use yellow or sweet onions for the richest flavor.Cook low and slow to avoid burning—the process takes time but yields amazing results.Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 5 days or freeze for 3 months.
