Description

This Cretan Dakos salad is a traditional Greek dish made with crunchy barley rusks, fresh tomatoes, creamy feta or mizithra cheese, and aromatic herbs. This easy Mediterranean salad is refreshing, healthy, and perfect as a light meal or appetizer.


Ingredients

  • 24 barley rusks (dakos)
  • 2 ripe tomatoes, grated or finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup feta cheese or mizithra cheese, crumbled
  • 34 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Olives (optional)
  • Capers (optional)

Instructions

  • Lightly moisten the barley rusks with a little water to soften slightly while keeping them firm.
  • Place the rusks on a serving plate.
  • Top generously with grated or finely chopped tomatoes.
  • Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt, black pepper, and oregano.
  • Add crumbled feta or mizithra cheese on top.
  • Garnish with olives and capers if desired.
  • Let sit for a few minutes to allow flavors to blend before serving.

Notes

Do not over-soak the rusks; they should stay slightly crunchy.Use ripe, juicy tomatoes for the best flavor.Serve immediately after assembling for ideal texture.
