Description

Easy Apple Hand Pies are individual, portable pastries filled with spiced apple filling and wrapped in flaky, golden-brown crusts. These homemade mini pies are simple to make using store-bought or homemade pie dough and are perfect for snacks, desserts, or holiday gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups peeled, diced apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 package refrigerated pie crusts (or homemade pie dough)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tbsp milk (for egg wash)
  • Coarse sugar (optional, for sprinkling)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine diced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cornstarch, lemon juice, and vanilla. Stir to coat evenly.
  3. Roll out pie dough and use a 4–5 inch round cutter to cut out circles. Reroll scraps if needed to get more rounds.
  4. Spoon a small amount (about 1–2 tablespoons) of apple filling into the center of each dough circle.
  5. Fold the dough over to create a half-moon shape and press edges to seal. Crimp edges with a fork.
  6. Place hand pies on the prepared baking sheet. Cut a small slit in the top of each for steam to escape.
  7. In a small bowl, whisk together egg and milk. Brush over the tops of the hand pies and sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired.
  8. Bake for 20–25 minutes or until golden brown and bubbling.
  9. Let cool on a wire rack before serving. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

Use any firm, tart apple variety for best results—Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn are great choices. To save time, use canned apple pie filling, but reduce the added sugar.Add a drizzle of caramel or a simple glaze for an extra touch of sweetness. These pies can be made ahead and frozen unbaked. Bake from frozen, adding 5–7 minutes to the bake time.
