Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/3 cup whole milk or heavy cream (plus more as needed)
  • 34 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt the butter completely.
  2. Stir in cocoa powder until fully combined and smooth.
  3. Remove from heat, then whisk in milk or cream and vanilla.
  4. Gradually whisk in powdered sugar until smooth and lump-free.
  5. Adjust consistency by adding more milk (for thinner) or powdered sugar (for thicker).
  6. Cool slightly until it thickens to a spreadable consistency.
  7. Spread over cooled cake, brownies, or cupcakes while still slightly warm.

Notes

For deeper flavor, add 1 tsp instant espresso powder. For extra richness, stir in chocolate chips at the end. This frosting firms up as it cools, developing a soft fudge-like texture.
