Description

These Easy Homemade Breadsticks are soft, fluffy, and perfectly golden with a buttery garlic and parmesan topping. Made with simple pantry ingredients, they’re the perfect side dish for pasta, soups, or salads. Freshly baked and full of flavor, these homemade breadsticks are far better than store-bought and surprisingly easy to make.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast

  • 1 cup warm water

  • 2 tablespoons sugar

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

For Topping

  • 3 tablespoons melted butter

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese

  • Optional chopped parsley

Instructions

  • Activate the yeast:
In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.

  • Make the dough:
Add olive oil, salt, and flour. Mix until a soft dough forms.

  • Knead the dough:
Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  • Let the dough rise:
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm place for 45–60 minutes until doubled in size.

  • Prepare the oven:
Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  • Shape the breadsticks:
Punch down the dough and divide it into 10–12 pieces. Roll each piece into a long breadstick shape and place on the baking sheet.

  • Bake:
Bake for 12–15 minutes until lightly golden.

  • Add topping:
Brush the warm breadsticks with melted butter and sprinkle with garlic powder, oregano, parmesan cheese, and parsley if desired.

  • Serve:
    Serve warm.

Notes

Use warm water (not hot) to properly activate the yeast.Bread flour can be used for slightly chewier breadsticks.Do not overcrowd the baking sheet to allow even baking.Brushing with butter immediately after baking keeps the breadsticks soft. These breadsticks are best served fresh and warm.
