Description

This Easy Spiced Chocolate Cake combines rich cocoa flavor with warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. It’s a moist, deeply flavorful cake that’s easy to prepare and perfect for cozy evenings or holiday gatherings.


Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk (or buttermilk)
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil (or melted butter)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup boiling water

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round or square cake pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Gradually mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined.
  5. Carefully stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth. It will be thin.
  6. Pour batter into prepared pan and smooth the top.
  7. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Let cool in pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before serving or frosting.

Notes

Add a pinch of cayenne for a spicy kick.Top with cream cheese frosting or dust with powdered sugar.Fold in mini chocolate chips or chopped nuts for texture.Use plant-based milk and oil to make it dairy-free.To make cupcakes, bake at 350°F for 18–22 minutes.
