Description
Flan is a smooth, creamy custard dessert topped with a golden caramel sauce. It’s a classic dish popular in many Latin American and European countries, made from simple ingredients like eggs, milk, and sugar, yet delivering a rich and elegant flavor.
Ingredients
- 1 cup granulated sugar (for caramel)
- 5 large eggs
- 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
- 1 (12-ounce) can evaporated milk
- 1/2 cup whole milk (optional, for lighter texture)
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the sugar until golden brown, swirling gently but not stirring. Immediately pour the caramel into a round baking dish or ramekins, tilting to coat the bottom. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, whole milk (if using), and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Pour the custard mixture over the cooled caramel.
- Place the flan dish in a larger baking pan. Fill the outer pan with hot water to create a water bath (about halfway up the sides of the flan dish).
- Bake for 50–60 minutes, or until the edges are set and the center is slightly jiggly. A knife inserted should come out mostly clean.
- Remove from oven, cool to room temperature, then chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours or overnight.
- To serve, run a knife around the edge of the dish and invert the flan onto a plate to release the caramel.
Notes
Work quickly when pouring the caramel, as it hardens fast.Don’t overbake—flan should be set but still jiggle slightly in the center.Chilling the flan helps it firm up and makes unmolding easier.Customize with flavors like coconut, coffee, or citrus zest.
