Description

Kentucky Derby pie is a Southern classic filled with gooey chocolate, crunchy walnuts or pecans, and a rich buttery filling all baked in a flaky pie crust. It’s a decadent, crowd-pleasing dessert that’s perfect for Derby Day, holidays, or family gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust (homemade or store-bought)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp bourbon (optional)
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the pie crust in a 9-inch pie pan and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until smooth.
  3. Stir in melted butter, flour, vanilla extract, bourbon (if using), and salt. Mix until well combined.
  4. Fold in chocolate chips and chopped nuts.
  5. Pour the filling into the prepared pie crust and spread evenly.
  6. Bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the center is set and the top is golden brown.
  7. Let cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Notes

Walnuts are traditional, but pecans add a sweeter flavor.Add a pinch of espresso powder for deeper chocolate flavor.Skip the bourbon for a family-friendly version. This pie is delicious warm or chilled, but serving it slightly warm with vanilla ice cream is classic. To make nut-free, simply omit nuts or replace with seeds.
