Description

Mini Chili Football Bread Bowls are fun, football-shaped mini loaves filled with hearty chili and topped with sour cream ‘laces.’ These festive, hand-held snacks are perfect for game day, parties, or casual get-togethers, offering a playful and delicious way to serve chili.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb store-bought or homemade bread dough (e.g., pizza or dinner roll dough)
  • 2 cups chili (homemade or store-bought)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or 1 beaten egg (for brushing)
  • 1/4 cup sour cream (for piping laces)
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheese (optional)
  • 2 tbsp chopped green onions or jalapeños (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Divide the bread dough into 8 equal portions and shape each into a small oval resembling a football.
  3. Place shaped dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and brush with olive oil or egg wash.
  4. Bake for 12–15 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through. Let cool slightly.
  5. Use a small knife to cut a shallow oval into the top of each bread and gently scoop out some of the inner bread to create a cavity.
  6. Warm the chili and fill each bread bowl with a generous spoonful.
  7. Transfer sour cream to a piping bag or plastic bag with a small tip cut off.
  8. Pipe one vertical line and several short horizontal lines across each to create football ‘laces.’
  9. Garnish with shredded cheese or green onions if desired, and serve immediately.

Notes

Use thick chili to prevent sogginess.Bread bowls can be baked ahead and stored in an airtight container.Use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream for a healthier option.Serve immediately after assembling to keep the bread crisp.Kids can help decorate the football laces with sour cream.
