Description

Monster Mash is a fun and spooky Halloween-themed recipe that combines mashed potatoes with a creative twist! The dish features creamy mashed potatoes, perfect for a festive treat, and is made even more exciting with colored veggies and ‘monster’ details that add character to the dish. It’s an adorable and tasty way to bring some fun to your Halloween dinner table!

Ingredients

  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup peas (for monster eyes)
  • 1/2 cup cooked carrots, chopped (for monster features)
  • 1 tablespoon food coloring (green or purple for a Halloween twist)
  • 1/4 cup sour cream (optional, for extra creaminess)
  • Black olives (for eyes or mouth)
  • Chives or parsley (for monster hair)

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, add the peeled and cubed potatoes. Fill with water until the potatoes are just covered. Bring to a boil and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender. Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot.
  2. Add butter, milk, and salt to the cooked potatoes. Mash them until smooth and creamy. You can also use a hand mixer for fluffier mashed potatoes. If you want extra creaminess, add sour cream at this stage.
  3. If you want to give your Monster Mash a spooky color, add a few drops of food coloring to the mashed potatoes and stir until the desired color is achieved (green or purple works well for a Halloween look).
  4. Spoon the mashed potatoes onto serving plates or a large platter to create ‘monster faces.’ You can make a mound of mashed potatoes for each monster, leaving space for ‘features.’
  5. Place cooked peas (or green olives) as monster eyes. You can use black olives to create the pupils or as a monster mouth.
  6. Chop some cooked carrots into small pieces and place them on the plate to make noses, ears, or other facial features.
  7. Use chives or parsley to add ‘hair’ to your monsters, making fun spikes or tufts on top of the mashed potato mound.
  8. Once the ‘monster faces’ are complete, serve and enjoy this spooky, fun, and delicious treat!

Notes

For extra flavor, add shredded cheese to the mashed potatoes or melt cheese on top before serving for a cheesy ‘monster’ effect. For a spicy version, add a dash of chili powder or hot sauce to the mashed potatoes.Use dairy-free butter and milk alternatives to make a vegan-friendly version of Monster Mash.Sweet potatoes can be used instead of regular potatoes for a slightly sweeter version. If you want a more dramatic look, use bell peppers for mouths or make spikes using carrot sticks.
