Description

Old Fashioned Goulash is a hearty, comforting one-pot meal made with ground beef, elbow macaroni, and a rich tomato-based sauce. It’s an easy-to-make, budget-friendly dish that appeals to all ages, perfect for cozy family dinners or bringing to a potluck.


Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes
  • 1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (6 oz) can tomato paste
  • 2 cups beef broth or water
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni (uncooked)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (for cooking)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Meat: Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add Vegetables: Stir in chopped onion, green bell pepper (if using), and garlic. Cook until vegetables soften, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Combine Tomatoes and Seasonings: Add diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, beef broth, basil, oregano, sugar, salt, and pepper. Stir well.
  4. Simmer: Bring the mixture to a simmer. Add the uncooked elbow macaroni, stir, and cover the pot. Let simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent pasta from sticking.
  5. Final Adjustments: Once pasta is tender and the sauce is thickened, taste for seasoning and adjust with salt and pepper if necessary.
