Description
Overnight French Toast Casserole is a cozy, make-ahead breakfast bake made with thick bread cubes soaked in a cinnamon-spiced custard. Baked until golden and crisp on top, it’s perfect for holidays, brunches, or weekend mornings.
Ingredients
- 1 loaf thick-cut bread (brioche, challah, or French), cut into 1-inch cubes
- 8 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk or half-and-half
- 1/2 cup heavy cream (optional)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp salt
- Butter, for greasing the dish
- Optional Topping:
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 4 tbsp cold butter, cubed
- Optional Toppings for Serving: powdered sugar, maple syrup, fresh berries, whipped cream
Instructions
- Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter. Place bread cubes evenly in the dish.
- In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream (if using), granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
- Pour the mixture evenly over the bread, pressing down gently so all bread is soaked.
- Cover tightly with foil or plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight (or at least 6 hours).
- In the morning, preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and let the dish sit at room temperature for 20 minutes.
- Optional Topping: In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon. Cut in butter until crumbly. Sprinkle over the casserole.
- Bake uncovered for 45–55 minutes, until top is golden and center is set.
- Let rest 5–10 minutes before serving. Top with powdered sugar, syrup, berries, or whipped cream as desired.
