Description

Sloppy Joe Casserole is a comforting, oven-baked twist on the classic sandwich. It features savory ground beef in a tangy tomato-based sauce, layered with cheese and topped with biscuits, pasta, or tater tots for a hearty family meal.


Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1/2 green bell pepper, chopped (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce or 1 cup sloppy joe sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp yellow or Dijon mustard
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 can refrigerated biscuit dough or 3 cups frozen tater tots or 2 cups cooked pasta
  • Cooking spray or oil, for greasing

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add chopped onion, bell pepper (if using), and garlic. Sauté for 3–4 minutes until softened.
  4. Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5–10 minutes until thickened.
  5. Pour the sloppy joe mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  6. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the meat mixture.
  7. Top with biscuit dough, cooked pasta, or frozen tater tots in an even layer.
  8. Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and cooked through.
  9. Let cool slightly before serving.
