Description

Sugar cookie frosting is a creamy, smooth, and easy-to-make icing perfect for decorating cut-out cookies. It sets with a soft finish, making it ideal for stacking, gifting, or festive presentations.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 12 tablespoons milk or heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (or almond extract)
  • Pinch of salt
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Sprinkles or colored sugar (optional, for decorating)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until smooth and creamy.
  2. Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing on low speed until fully incorporated.
  3. Add vanilla extract, salt, and 1–2 tablespoons of milk or cream. Beat until smooth and fluffy.
  4. Adjust the consistency by adding more milk for a thinner frosting or more powdered sugar for a thicker one.
  5. If desired, divide the frosting into bowls and add food coloring to each. Mix until evenly colored.
  6. Spread onto cooled sugar cookies using a knife or spatula, or transfer to a piping bag for detailed designs.
  7. Immediately add sprinkles or decorations before the frosting begins to set.
  8. Allow the frosted cookies to rest for 1–2 hours to set before stacking or packaging.

Notes

Frosting sets to a soft crust, perfect for stacking but not rock hard like royal icing.Gel food coloring is best for vibrant colors without thinning the frosting.Flavor with almond, lemon, peppermint, or coconut extract for variation.Store leftover frosting in the fridge for up to 1 week; re-whip before use.Frosted cookies can be stored at room temperature once frosting is set.
