Ingredients
- 2 large bunches Swiss chard
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 tablespoons butter, divided
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- ¾ cup heavy cream
- ½ cup Parmesan cheese, grated
- ½ cup breadcrumbs or panko breadcrumbs
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- Pinch of ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon lemon zest
Instructions
- Wash Swiss chard thoroughly and separate the stems from the leaves.
- Chop stems into small pieces and roughly chop the leaves.
- Heat olive oil and 1 tablespoon butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add chopped chard stems and onion. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in 2 cloves garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds.
- Add Swiss chard leaves and cook until wilted.
- Pour in heavy cream and simmer gently for 3–4 minutes until slightly thickened.
- Stir in Parmesan cheese, salt, black pepper, and nutmeg.
- In a separate skillet, melt the remaining butter and toast breadcrumbs with the remaining garlic until golden and crispy.
- Spoon the creamed Swiss chard into a serving dish and top with garlic breadcrumbs and lemon zest before serving.
Notes
Panko breadcrumbs create extra crunch, while fresh breadcrumbs provide a softer topping. Store breadcrumbs separately if making ahead to maintain crispness. A squeeze of fresh lemon juice before serving brightens the creamy flavors beautifully.
