Ingredients

For the dough:

  • 3 cups (375g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 packet (7g) dry yeast
  • 1 cup (240ml) warm milk or water
  • ¼ cup (60ml) oil or melted butter
  • 1 egg
  • ½ tsp salt

For the filling:

  • 2 cups cooked and grated sugar beets
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts
  • 23 tbsp sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp cinnamon (optional)

Instructions

  • In a bowl, combine warm milk (or water), yeast, and a little sugar. Let sit until foamy.
  • Add flour, egg, oil (or butter), and salt. Mix and knead into a smooth, elastic dough.
  • Cover and let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
  • In a separate bowl, mix grated sugar beets, walnuts, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon.
  • Divide the dough into small portions and roll each into a circle.
  • Place a spoonful of filling in the center and fold to seal into pie shapes.
  • Arrange pies on a lined baking tray and let rest briefly.
  • Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
  • Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden brown.
  • Cool slightly before serving.
